The Ain Shams University archaeological team  Unearth Limestone Cabin and Sphinx Statue in Egypt's Qena Governorate

Archaeologists from Ain Shams University, headed by Mamdouh El-Damaty, have made an exciting discovery in the Qena governorate of Egypt. They have uncovered the remains of a limestone cabin from the Roman period during their excavations to the east of the famous Dendera Temple. This discovery adds to the already rich history of the region and provides more insight into the ancient civilizations that once flourished in Egypt.

According to Mostafa Waziri, who is the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, a temple dedicated to the god Horus was constructed in the same region during the Roman period.

El-Damaty, the head of the archaeological mission, has described the limestone cabin as a two-level platform with a foundation and sloping floors. During the excavation, a water storage basin made of red bricks, covered with mortar, and with stairs was discovered inside the cabin. El-Damaty believes that the cabin dates back to the Byzantine period.

And he also mentioned that while cleaning the water storage basin, a limestone statue in the shape of a sphinx was discovered. The Sphinx Statue depicts a Roman emperor wearing the Nemes headdress, which includes a bridge above the forehead.Based on the initial examination of the statue's face, it is believed to depict Emperor Claudius.

El-Damaty expressed admiration for the newly discovered sphinx statue, describing it as exquisitely beautiful. The statue's face is accurately depicted, with distinct royal features and a faint smile with dimples on both ends of the lips. The statue's face also shows traces of yellow and red paint. Below the statue, a painting from The Greco-Roman Era In Egypt  written in hieroglyphics and demotic was found.

The Ain Shams University archaeological team is planning to continue its excavation work in the region around the Horus Temple, which is situated to the east of the Temples of Dendera and in front of the Isis Gate. The team hopes to uncover more artifacts and gain further insights into the ancient history of the area.

It's worth noting that the excavation work began in February of this year, with a radar survey of the Osirian halls in the Dendera Temple and a magnetic and radio survey in the area to the east of the temple's surrounding wall, in front of the Isis Gate. The mission worked in collaboration with a team from the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research.
