Unveiling Ancient Mysteries: Discovering the Tomb of Banahsi and the Ramesside Treasures in Saqqara

A joint Italian-Dutch archaeological mission working in the Saqqara Necropolis area in Egypt succeeded in discovering a tomb for a person named Banahsi from the Ramesside period during the excavations it is conducting at the site during its current excavation season.

The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Waziri, said in a statement on Wednesday that the mission also succeeded in discovering a number of chapels that date back to the same time period, noting that these discoveries contribute to shedding light on the development of the Saqqara cemetery in the Ramesside period as well as unveiling New characters not known in historical sources. The Ramesside era is a term given to the time period in which the nineteenth and twentieth dynasties ruled ancient Egypt, deriving from the rulers of these two families who bore the name Ramesses.

According to Muhammad Youssef, the director of the Saqqara Antiquities District, the recently discovered tomb has the characteristics of a self-contained temple. It includes an entrance, an inner courtyard with stone column bases, a well that leads to underground burial chambers, and three adjacent chapels.

Christian Greco, director of the Egyptian Museum in Turin and head of the archaeological mission from the Italian side, stated that inside the tomb was found a painting depicting the owner of the tomb, Banhasi, and his wife Paya, who bore the title of the singer of God Amun Ra. And his wife together in front of the offering table.

Lara Weiss, the curator of the Egyptian and Nubian collection at the Leiden Museum in the Netherlands, mentioned that the archaeological mission made an exciting find at Saqqara. They discovered the remains of four small chapels, two of which contained inscriptions of remarkable accuracy and intricate details, despite their compact size.

The Saqqara region, located about 40 kilometers from the capital, Cairo, is an open museum, as it includes among its flanks most of the antiquities of the ancient History Of Egypt, including the step pyramid, which is the oldest huge stone building in history for King Djoser, and the pyramids of the most important kings of the Fifth and Sixth Dynasties.
